I had the opportunity to use Sony’s top of the line camera for a couple of weeks. I could go into the in’s and out’s of the camera but really there are websites that already do that, so I thought I would just relate my experience with the camera. I also had the Sony Carl Zeiss 24-70 as the lens I was able to use. This to me was a little bit of a mixed bag but I’ll explain that a little later. The camera is big, heavy and generally feels like a top model should. The viewfinder is huge and very bright and was a blessing in the low light that landscape photographers find themselves shooting in most of the time.

The A900 doesn’t have live view and at first I thought this was a little strange. I like live view for white balance adjustments, but Sony has a different idea with the A900, it has a preview image, hit the DOF button and a preview image is taken. Now not only can you adjust the white balance but you can also adjust exposure, aperture and d-lighting control. This is actually a really handy feature and I found myself using it quite a bit on my low light exposures.

So were there any negatives? Well I had a couple of problems, one was the rather clunky mirror in the camera, I used mirror lockup where ever I could and I didn’t notice any softness from the clunky mirror slapping, but it certainly is louder than other cameras in its price class, its pluses though out weighed the mirror clunk.
Now for my major problem I had with the whole setup. I had Sony’s top of the range Carl Zeiss 24-70 2.8 lens. This retails in at around $2800.00+ AUS. This is a lot of cash to fork out for a lens and as a pro lens you would expect the best quality, so what’s the problem with it. It is super sharp, fast focus, it has good close focus, but don’t point this lens anywhere near the sun. It flares so bad I gave up trying to shoot a sunburst in an image. A major problem for me as I shoot into the sun quite a bit. I’m talking to Sony about the problem so see what they say.

So all up I had a great time with the Sony apart from the two little niggles, well maybe the lens one is a little more major, but would I buy one. You bet for landscape photography it is a blast of a camera to use, very nice detailed images that can be printed to A2 straight from camera. It really has a lot going for it.
If you’re looking for a landscape digital camera you would do yourself a favour if you check it out.
